Huntingdon Valley (HV) used very strong pitching from Jake Yannessa (5 IP,2 ER) and Paul Buckley (2 IP) to keep Warminster in check while beating them 4-3 on Sunday evening. The game was played at a very high level and could have gone either way but HV provailed.
"The game was great and could have been a loss easily" Head Coach Evan Horn said, "In order to beat a team like Warminster you need a little luck and plays have to go your way. Coach Penacle (Warminster Head Coach Rich Penacle) is one of the best in the business and to beat him is an honor.
Yannessa started on the bump for HV and was in trouble quikly when Warminster put runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out. Yannessa got out of the inning with 2 strikeouts.
"Ness (Jake Yannessa) comes to play everyday and anything short of a great performence would be surprising" Coach Horn continued "He understands the game and watching him is really entertaining.
HV jumped out quick and took a 1-0 lead when Matt Hyman (1 for 2) used a matrix style slide to score off a single by Nick Rittler.
"Matty ran through my stop sign" Coach Horn said "I was going to give him an ear full if he didnt score but he did and all is good and he lives another day, lol"
Warminster scored 2 runs in the 2nd inning to take a short lived 2-1 lead. HV bounced right back in the bottom of the 2nd inning when with 2 outs Jake Madnick (1 for 2) singled in Nick Rittler (2 for 3, Triple) and Matt Meyers (2 for 2, 5 for 5 on the season) smoked a run scoring double scoring Madnick to take a 3-2 lead.
Yannessa put Warminster down in order in the 3rd and 4th inning before giving up a single run in the 5th inning. HV turned the ball over to Buckley who shows that he might just be the closer the team is looking for as he mowed down Warminster to earn his first save of the season.
"Buck (Buckley) really threw well in relief today" Coach Horn contined "I am a Coach that likes that closer role and Buck just might be the answer. Buck pitches with a stone face and never lets anything get to him. He is going to be a very big part of this team and we need him to be ready to throw the ball every night.
HV plays on Monday away at Warrington in a non-league game

Huntingdon Valley Uses 5 Run 5th Inning to Win League Opener 7-5 Over Southampton
Huntingdon Valley (HV) used a 5 run 5th inning to win its season opener over Southampton (SH) 7-5 in a rain shortened game. The game was halted with 1 out in the 7th inning due to a lightning strike. HV received strong pitching from Dan Johnson (4IP, 3hits, ER, 4Ks) and Ross Goodman (2 IP 5Ks) along with a great offensive game by Nick Rittler (3 for 4).
"For the first game of the season I thought we looked very sloppy" Coach Evan Horn said "For us to make 5 errors we where very fortunate to come away with a victory. If not for the great pitching by Johnson and Goodman we are looking at a loss for sure"
HV struck first in the top of the first inning when Jake Yannessa (1 for 2, RBI, 2 runs scored) singled up the middle to plate Rittler who earlier singled and stole second base.
"Great sign to see Ness (Yannessa) come through on his first at bat. He has added insentive this season and I expect a lot out of him. Truly a great kid and a joy to Coach"
HV lost the lead quick as its defense made errors and didnt help the pitchers. HV was very lucky to be only trailing 5-2 entering the 5th inning. In the 5th inning HV plated 5 runs with the use of hits by Rittler, Team Captain Jake Madnick and Mario Incollingo. The biggest hit of the game and inning came off the bat of Jordan Pocrass who lined a 2 run single up the middle to but HV in the lead to stay.
"The 5th inning was an inning I expect every game" Horn said laughing "We cant play catch up all season that is for sure. The hit by Pocrass was the game winner and to see it come from him is exciting. Your talking about a kid that loves the games and has both ears wide open learning it"
After the 5th inning HV turned the ball over to Goodman. Goodman faced 7 batters the rest of the way and retired all of them in order with 5 strikeouts.
"Chips (Goodman) really came to play today that is for sure" Horn continued "For him to throw that well is a huge plus for our team. I didnt expect him to strike out 5 batters but more like all 7 hitters he faced but I will settle for the 5"

Huntingdon Valley Looks To Improve on Near .500 Record
Huntingdon Valley American Legion looks to improve on a near .500 (10-11) record last season. With the addition of a few players the ceiling looks high. HV has many All-League players returning to an already very experience roster. The coaching staff will also be together for a second year Head Coach Evan Horn, Assistant Head Coachs Mike Landes and Dennis Murphy
"Our team looks like it will have a ton of experience" second year Head Coach Evan Horn said, "We have all-leaguers returning (Cal Palmer, Lou Palmer, Jake Madnick, Nick Rittler, Ross Goodman and Chris Ruhl) and the addition of Jake Yannessa, Daniel Johnson and Mario Incollingo who are all 1 year experienced players I think the ceiling is very high."
Pitching is the name of the game and Coach Horn seems to believe that his staff might be one of the top ones in the league
"The way I see it we have a tough pitching staff, we can go 6 deep. When you can have a rotation of Johnson, Yannessa (1st team all league-Springfield), Goodman (3 time all-league-Lower Moreland, Matt Lawlor (2nd team all league-Cheltenham), Paul Buckley (Holy Ghost) and Chris Ruhl (Abington) you are throwing a potential number one pitcher every game. I am looking forward to just figuring out who to pitch against who"
Hitting will also be a strong point for HV this season. The return of 1st team all league outfielders Nick Rittler, Lewis Palmer(Lower Moreland) Cal Palmer (Lower Moreland) and Matt Hyman (Lower Moreland). Co-Captains Jake Madnick and Chris Ruhl. The emergence of Matt Meyers (1st team-Cheltenham), Jordan Pocrass (1st Team-Lower Moreland), Rob Hoffman (2nd Team-Lower Moreland) and Rafael Fernandez (Cheltenham)
"The team looks like it will compete this season and that is all that I can ask from my "boys", we have to make the plays and get key 2 out hits and the season should be a successful one". Horn continued "I will have a lot of postions that have two good players so putting in the right player at the right time will be tough but I feel confident with the help of the other Coaches I will get them right"

Huntingdon Valley has 9 total players on All League Team
Huntingdon Valley (HV) had 9 total players named to the All-American Legion Team tonight. Leading the way as 1st teamers for HV is Philadelphia University Freshman and team Captain Jake Madnick (catcher), Lower Moreland High School Senior Lou Palmer (DH), Penn State Abington Freshmen Jesse Goldstein (Outfield) and Germantown Friends Senior Nick Rittler (Outfield).
"Anytime you have 4 First Team All-League players on one team it makes you think that you might have had a better record then you ended up with but in this case it isnt the fact" Coach Evan Horn said, "Jake played with 100% fire and heart this season and deserved any award that could be given to any player. Jake wears his heart on his sleeve and I just love the way he became a leader this season. Lou started off slow but really kicked it in to gear the second half of the season. Lou started to believe in his ability and the results came after. Jess was one of our team MVP's. He really improved over the season and the best part about his season was the incredible defense he played every game. Nick was a huge surprise for me. He didnt start the season as a starter but when given a chance took complete control of his chance and ran with it all the way to 1st team honors"
HV also placed 2 players as 2nd Team All-League players. Penn State Abington Sophomore Brian Camp (pitcher) and Penn State Altona Freshman Jared Licht (Shortstop)
"Our 2 second team players could have easily been first team players but they where up against some really good players" Horn continued "Jared was another one of them players who just always is looking to learn the game and get better. Jared is a truly a great player and yet a better person, he will be impossible to replace next season. Brian was our team MVP and came in 3rd for league's MVP as well. Brian was a bull dog on the mound and gave me everything you could on the field. Brian grew as the season went on and developed the pitching mind that makes pitchers become really good pitchers"
HV received 3 Honerable Mentions as well. Lower Moreland Senior Ross "Chips" Goodman (Pitcher), Lower Moreland Senior Cal Palmer (Second Base) and Abington High School Senior Chris Ruhl (1st Base).
"Chips (Ross) was all I thought he would be" Horn said "He pitched every 3rd game and was really cheated out of about 4 wins. He never really got any run support. Cal was as steady as you can be in the field. Cal made just about every play in the field and its nice to say before a ball is hit that you hope it goes to him because you know the play is over. His hitting was consistant all season. Chris was a great team leader that seemed to excel at the coaching style of mine. Chris a always on the top of his game and never let anything bother him. He is going to be a huge part of next seasons team"
HV is off until it goes to Rehoboth Beach for a tournament on Friday Aug 5th-7th

Huntingdon Valley Plays Yardley-Morrisville to a 4-4 Tie in Scrimmage
Huntingdon Valley (HV) played Yardley-Morrisville (YM) in a Non-League American Legion Game on Thursday night to a 4-4 tie. Each team used most of their pitchers in the game for an inning or two and the game was very competitive.
"When you have two teams from two different leagues you just dont know what to expect" Coach Evan Horn said "They are a well coached team with many good players so it was nice to see my boys battle with them from the first pitch to the last"
HV used pitchers Brian Camp and Matt Lawlor for 2 innings each and Ross "Chips" Goodman for 1 2/3. Robert Hoffman closed the game out with the final out.
"I wanted to see all my pitchers throw the pill today and we closed the door with Hoff (Robert Hoffman) even though he made it interesting at the end" Coach Horn said.
HV feel behind in the bottom of the 2nd inning but bounced back plating 2 runs in the top of the third. Goodman lined a 2 out single to left field to score Paul Buckley (1-3) and Hoffman (2-3).
"Chips (Ross Goodman) came through when we needed him to with a 2 strike count" Coach Horn continued "When Chips puts the ball in play I beleive he has a better chance of getting a hit then not. We need him doing that to continue to improve"
HV scored 2 more runs when YM walked them in. YM tied the game in the bottom of the 5th which ended the scoring. The game was called after the 6th inning due to darkness.

Goldstein Leads Huntingdon Valley's 11 hit Attack in Win Over Cedarbrook 8-4
Huntingdon Valley (HV) seems to be clicking on all cylinders at the end of the season as it pounded out 11 hits in a 8-4 victory over Host Cedarbrook to push its record to a respectful 9-11. HV, winners of 4 of their last 6 games, seems to be getting timely hits and great defense towards the end of a short baseball season.
"I said it before and I will say it again, We are learning how to finally win games like this but it is a little to late to make the playoffs" Head Coach Evan Horn continued "At this point I want these boys to know what it feels like to win games like this and build for next season"
HV scored in every inning but the last. HV's biggest inning was the 4th when they plated 4 runs and pushed the score to 7-2 at the time. The biggest hit came off the bat of Lower Moreland Senior and Penn State Abington bound Jesse Goldstein. Goldstein ( 2 for 3, double, RBI, Run scored) drove a ball to right field that hit the fence on one hop to plate a run and ignite the inning. Lower Moreland Freshman Jack Titus (1 for 2) also got in on the fun by driving a double to the left field corner
"Jessie seems to have taken to me and Coach Mike Landes (assistant coach) style of hitting" Coach Horn said "Jesse works hard 100% of the time between the lines if its hitting, running or cheering he gives us everything he has. He will be very hard to replace next season that is for sure"
Abington senior Chris Ruhl (7 strikeouts) pitched the first 4 2/3 innings for HV and did a great job on a spot start. Lower Moreland senior Ross Goodman entered the game with 2 runners on base and 2 outs to close out the 5th inning and pitch a scoreless 6th.
"Chris (Ruhl) did a great job today. He really hasn't pitched at all this season but we where shorthanded and I knew he would do a great job. Once the game got close and Chris reached 100 pitches I had to turn the man known as "Chips" (Ross Goodman) and he did what he has done all season and that is pitch great and give me his all"
HV also received 2 hits from Ace pitcher and Penn State Abington Freshman Brian Camp (2 for 3, 2 RBI's) and Lower Moreland Junior Lou Palmer. Camp laced a triple over the right fielders head for his first hit of the season.
"Brian's (Camp) hit not only surprised me but also surprised him. Brian got to third base and looked like he saw a ghost" Horn smiled "Brian is a character but I was happy for him"
HV closes out the season on Tuesday at home agianst the Morelanders
